Francis Joseph Tschan was born January 1, 1881 in Germany. He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1901 and the Master of Arts degree in 1903, both from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. In 1916 he received the doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Chicago. An honorary doctor of laws degree was conferred on him by Loyola University in 1933 and a doctorate of humane letters by St. Vincent's College at Latrobe, PA in 1951.
